The Kids Are All Right and other Films of Kunal Sharma

Kunal Kunal Sharma plays Jai, the somewhat shy boyfriend of Mia "Joni" Wasikowska in The Kids Are All Right. Static Multimedia describes Sharma as a tween heartthrob who is making a successful jump from Disney Channel fare to adult movies.

He's got a winning personality, as shown in this YouTube video of Sharma teaching the interviewer the moonwalk, and has previously appeared in episodes of Hannah Montana, Veronica Mars, Crossing Jordan, and Legally Blondes, a spin-off of the successful Reese Witherspoon comedies centered on the adventures of her twin British cousins.

But Sharma may be taking a more serious turn. For example, he'll appear with Danny Glover in the upcoming Mooz-lum, a drama that looks at perceptions of U.S. Muslims following 9/11, and the somewhat mysterious Sacred Journey, which looks at how a diverse group of high-school seniors get through a three-day trip required for their graduation. On a less serious note, he's also in the upcoming high-school comedy The Prankster.

Best Feel-Good Family Movies

DF-00817 RV2 The Kids Are All Right is a great feel-good family movie. When a movie can warm the heart and offer a story of goodness, it can truly be labeled a feel-good movie. Throughout the years of film production, there have been thousands of heart-warming movies hit the big screen. The best feel-good movies for families are those that speak to everyone, no matter your gender or age.

Here are some other feel-good classics to rent this summer on DVD:

Imagine That (2009)

It’s hard to imagine Eddie Murphy offering a feel-good movie for the entire family but that is exactly what Imagine That provides. Evan Danielson (Eddie Murphy) displays his inability to prioritize his work life with that of his daughter Olivia (Yara Shahidi). With the help of Olivia’s imagination and her blanket, Evan Danielson learns how real success is truly defined.

Forrest Gump (1994)

Oscar-winning Forrest Gump will never grow old and many generations will continue to enjoy the message of the movie. The fictitious story has different morals. Foremost, it teaches integrity and simplicity in how we view others. Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) is labeled as an “idiot” or stupid, but Gump proves time and time again that it’s those who have labeled him who are truly stupid.

Dead Poets Society (1989)

English teacher Professor Keating (Robin Williams) encourages a group of young students to open their minds to more than the status quo. What these boys are taught would change their lives forever – for the better. Young people often live for the moment and forget that the actions they take today could alter their future.

Simon Birch (1998)

Born with a condition that affects his height, Simon Birch believes that God intentionally made him short for a special purpose. Simon befriends Joe who is also a town outcast. Their friendship is tested when Simon accidently kills Joe’s mother. Although the treatment Simon receives by his community makes this a difficult film to watch, it is an uplifting story that many children can relate to.

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

One of the most – if not the most – watched movie during the holidays, this is a classic with a beautiful lesson. Even 50 years after its release, many can still relate to George Bailey (James Stewart). He has given everything to everyone especially the town he loves but on Christmas Eve, Bailey contemplates suicide. With the help of his guardian angel, George is given a glimpse of what life would have been like if he had never existed.

What's the favorite feel-good movie in your family?

Yaya DaCosta and The Kids Are All Right

Yaya2 Before Yaya DaCosta's turn as Mark Ruffalo's on-screen girlfriend in The Kids Are All Right, the New York native already enjoyed a fast-expanding film and TV career to match her wide array of talents.

Previously best known as a runner-up on America's Next Top Model (where S2S blogs that she frequently played the peacemaker), DaCosta appeared in 44 episodes of All My Children and eight of Ugly Betty. She tells About Hollywood Movies that she learned ballroom dancing to play opposite Antonio Banderas in 2006's Take the Lead, based on dancer Pierre Dulane's efforts to teach his art to underprivileged kids.

Before her acting career? The young DaCosta was no slacker either, and tells Esquire she graduated from Brown with degrees in international relations and African studies, and is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.

These days, DaCosta tells BV on Movies that Mark Ruffalo was smart, generous and a complete gentleman during the Kids shoot and that she likes working with female directors.

What's next? DaCosta plays a Siren (like this) in the new Tron sequel, Tron Legacy, and tells Contact Music she's already trying to add the Siren doll to her collection.

Kids Are All Right Comes to More Screens

The Kids Are All Right jumped from seven screens to 38 this past weekend and sold about $1 million in tickets, giving it a cumulative total of $1.8 million and a stellar $27,036 per engagement, blogs Hollywood Reporter, which Alt Film Guide says is by far the highest of any other movie in play and continues the strong per-screen numbers that Kids showed last weekend.

Numbers like that mean this could be the summer's sleeper hit, blogs Opposing Views, while Deadline.com notes that ticket sales jumped 52 percent from Friday to Saturday, indicating strong word of mouth.
